Yen Tu Mountain, located in Uong Bi Town, Quang Ninh Province, is one of the highest peaks in the Dong Trieu Mountains in Vietnam's north-eastern region. Yen Tu is renowned as "The birthplace of Buddhism in Vietnam" because it contains several historical treasures in addition to being a well-known natural scenery.
Tourists can reach Yen Tu via shuttle bus, automobile, or motorcycle from Hanoi's capital city. If you're preparing to go on a Halong Bay Cruise, adding an extra day to your journey to the coastal province of Yen Tu would be ideal.
The first stop on the road to Yen Tu is Giai Oan Stream (Justifying Spring), which has a magnificent green stone bridge linking two sides. This 10-meter-long bridge was constructed in the style of antique architecture. According to legend, when King Tran Nhan Tong intended to surrender his throne and become a monk, his wives and concubines attempted to urge him to reconsider by suiciding into the spring. The monk king constructed a temple nearby and titled the stream "Giai Oan" in their honor.
After about 35-50 minutes of climbing, you'll arrive at a lush green courtyard with vibrant colors from many pagoda flower species. Six massive towers encircle the pagoda, the largest of which is dedicated to King Tran Nhan Tong.
The Hoa Yen Pagoda, which stands at a height of 543 meters, is the largest pagoda in the Yen Tu Mountain pagoda complex. A lengthy row of Glyptostrobus trees, reported to have been planted during King Tran Nhan Tong's reign at Yen Tu, still stands here.
The Van Tieu Pagoda, which is surrounded by layers of white clouds and rises to a height of 700 meters, and the Dong Pagoda, which stands at 1,068 meters and is entirely constructed of copper. Both pagodas are thousands of years old and are extremely sacred places to visit. Standing atop Yen Tu's tallest point, one may be able to see a panoramic view of North-eastern Vietnam, the Bach Dang River, and, most notably, the natural marvel of Halong Bay.
