Chuc Thanh Pagoda was founded as the oldest Buddhistic Pagoda in Hoi An in 1454 by Monk Minh Hai of China. The temple features a mixture of Vietnamese and Chinese designs and houses the Guan Yin (Goddess of Mercy) marble statue, intrusive animal carvings, lacquered pillars, and 16 grave towers of eminent monks. The Chuc Thanh Pagoda is regarded as the birthplace of the "Thien Tam Te" religion, where antique ritual objects are still in use today, such as the 200-year-old stone gong, a wooden gong in carp form, and several bells.
The two-story temple has undergone various renovations over the years, but the original construction is still completely intact. Several beautiful animal sculptures, lacquered pillars, mural paintings, and signage engraved with ancient Chinese characters may be found on the temple grounds.
In the main prayer halls are deities Tam The Phat, Di Lago and La Han, while a Guan Yin Marble (Goddess of Mercy) statue is placed on the front court. The pagoda is surrounded by 16 towers, including Minh Hai, Thiet Tho and An Bich, of the eminent monks of Hoi An.
The Chuc Thanh Pagoda, which is widely considered as the origin of the Vietnamese-Buddhist "Thien Tam Te" religion, is notably busy during annual festivals like Tet and Lunar New Year, when you can see its resident monks and local pilgrims worshiping deities. A 200-year-old stone gong, a carp-shaped wooden gong, and many bells are among the antique ritual artifacts still in use today.
Chuc Thanh Pagoda is a worthwhile destination for those wishing to venture beyond Hoi An Ancient Town. It is easily accessible by bicycle. When visiting Chuc Thanh Pagoda, as with any other site of worship, dress accordingly (no tank tops, shorts, or miniskirts).
