The Notre Dame Cathedral (previously Saigon Church) rests quietly in a quiet nook of Ho Chi Minh City's bustling center, but it is one of the city's most appealing locations.
It was once known as Saigon Church and was built by French colonists in the late 1880s. After the erection of the statue "Peaceful Notre Dame" in 1959, the name Notre Dame was bestowed. The Vatican designated the cathedral as a basilica in 1962, and it was given the formal name of Saigon Notre Dame Cathedral Basilica.
Notre Dame Cathedral, the only remaining stronghold of Catholicism in mostly Buddhist Vietnam, is located in a calm corner of bustling downtown Ho Chi Minh City.
The 60-meter-tall neo-Romanesque edifice is made of red bricks imported from France and features two towers with six bronze bells. A statue of the Virgin Mary, created in Rome from Italian marble, stands in front of the Cathedral and is said to have shed tears in 2005.
Every Sunday, masses are held in Notre Dame Cathedral, which is a working ecclesiastical structure.
