Dong Khoi Street history
Dong Khoi Street, which is lined with French colonial houses, has seen various modifications in Ho Chi Minh City. It was known as Rue Catinat under the French occupation because it was the center of splendor.
During the Vietnam War, it was renamed "Tu Do," meaning Freedom Street. When the Communists took control of Saigon in the late 1970s, it was renamed Dong Khoi, which means Total Revolution.
Dong Khoi Street present
Dong Khoi Street is now the commercial core of the city. Despite being overshadowed by surrounding high-rise office complexes, it is still the best site to observe the grand ancient colonial structures. This lively street is now lined with international companies, boutiques, elegant cafes, and high-end restaurants.
Take a stroll down Dong Khoi Street to see what remains of imperial architecture. Starting at the Saigon River's southern end, take in the Continental Hotel, the Saigon Opera House, the Caravelle Hotel, the stunning Gustav Eiffel-designed Central Post Office, and the Hotel de Ville, which is now the People's Committee Building, before arriving at the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris Square.
