Tan Dinh pastel Pink Church

The Tan Dinh Church, or the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, is the second largest in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) and is brightly pastel pink with a Romanian architectural style. Built in 1870 and finished in 1876 during the French colonial period when Vietnam was part of French Indochina, the structure has weathered Vietnam's violent history.

Tan Dinh Church Architecture

This pastel pink church, well admired for its appearance, reflects old Roman architecture with a Gothic flair. The nave of Tan Dinh Church is surrounded by a large barrel-vaulted roof with fake ceilings. A triforium and a small arched top gallery are also included. Two chapels, one dedicated to Mary and Joseph and the other to St Theresa, are located at the church's entrance on either side of the nave. Later, a U-shaped rear addition was added to the structure to provide seating on either side of the altar. Tan Dinh Church, in general, has a Renaissance feel about it.

A three-meter-high cross rises atop the 52-meter-tall main tower. A 5.5-ton bell rests inside the tower. Two rows of columns line the inner sanctuary, and the altar is fashioned of Italian marble.

Tan Dinh Church History

The Tan Dinh Church in Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City) was built in the 19th century under the guidance of Father Donatien Eveillard during the French colonization of Vietnam. Construction began in 1870 and took six years to complete. It is Saigon's second largest church, after the famed Notre Dame Cathedral, which will be closed for renovations for the next two years. The Sisters of Saint Paul de Chartres accepted Father Eveillard's request to open a school and orphanage close to the church in 1877, shortly after the building was dedicated. Father Eveillard died in 1883. Even now, the great man's grave can be located in the church.

The church and school buildings were reconstructed for the first time in the early 1890s under the direction of his successor, Father Louis-Eugene Louvet, because the existing structures needed to be updated. Tan Dinh Church was painted in the famous pink in 1949, after a few periodic refurbishments.
