The Saigon Opera House (Municipal Theatre) in Ho Chi Minh City, which is more than 120 years old, is an attractive colonial edifice with three stories and 800 seats that is one of the city's emblems.
Built in 1897, the rebuilt three-story, 800-seat Opera House is utilized to stage a wide range of performing arts, including ballet, orchestral concerts, Vietnamese traditional dance, and plays, in addition to opera. Performances are marketed throughout the structure, and information is available at the nearby state-run tourist information center, Saigon Travel.
The outside has a polished pearl appearance and is a fantastic location for photography, especially at night when bathed in a gentle orange light. Inside, expect swaths of red velvet, classical friezes, and oak floors throughout a vaulted archway that has been meticulously maintained. Although the building's official name is the Municipal Theatre of Ho Chi Minh City, it is far more generally known as the Saigon Opera House, and it was restored in 1995 to its original state at the turn of the nineteenth century.
Address: 07 Lam Son Square, District 1, HCMC, Vietnam (located near the famed Notre Dame Cathedral and the traditional Central Post Office at the intersection of Le Loi and Dong Khoi Streets).
