Nguyen Hue Street is a lovely walking and flowery road in bustling District 1 of Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon). The Rex Hotel and the People's Committee building, both examples of beautiful French architecture, flank the spacious walkway. For a refreshing breeze, sit on a bench under one of the shady trees or walk to the opposite side of the Saigon River.
Nguyen Hue walking street history
From the bank of the Saigon River (Bach Dang Wharf presently) to Xa Tay Palace (People's Committee Building of Ho Chi Minh City now), Nguyen Hue Street was known as Cho Vai Canal during the French colonial period. Merchant ships and military vessels used the Cho Vai Canal as an inner-city canal. Two streets, named Charner and Rigault, run parallel to the canal's two banks. The canal was filled in 1887, and the two streets were combined into Charner Boulevard. On solemn holidays, a French naval band would perform at the top of Charner Boulevard (currently in front of the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City). Charner Boulevard was renamed Nguyen Hue Boulevard in 1956 and became Sai Gon's most attractive roadway at the time.
Nguyen Hue walking street present
Nguyen Hue Street has been designated as a walking street, with two sectors totaling 670 meters in length and 60 meters in width. Uncle Ho's copper alloy statue, standing 7.2 meters tall and facing the Sai Gon River, is located at the President Ho Chi Minh Statue Park (from Le Thanh Ton Street to Le Loi Street). A stele beside Uncle Ho's Statue commemorates the presentation of the Southern Interim Administrative Committee to the city's citizens following the August Revolution's victory in 1945.
Nguyen Hue walking street activities
Parades, gatherings, street and flower festivals, exhibitions, culture and sports events, art performances, etc. are all held on Nguyen Hue Walking Street in Ho Chi Minh City. The Ho Chi Minh City Street Show, a street art performance program, is held in the evenings on Saturdays and Sundays.
The street offers free Wi-Fi 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, at a speed of 1 gigabit per second, allowing multiple individuals to use the internet at the same time.
