Ham Rong (Dragon Jaw) Mountain, which is shaped like a dragon's head and is a great combination of man-made and natural scenery, is a popular tourism location in the middle of Sapa town, dimly looming in the thin veil of the early morning.
At Ham Rong mountain, there are many different types of flowers and orchard gardens may be found. Wandering stone walkways bring visitors through a wild peach grove and then to orchid gardens with over 6000 orchid plants representing 194 different species. Aside from that, there are many native and exotic flowers growing along the walks, such as Nile lily, hydrangea, geraniums, ox-eyed daisies, and happy blossom. Mountain fruits such as peaches, plums, and pears grow here as well. The scenery is veiled in the fog, and the reverberating sound of a Mong minority boy's bamboo flute transforms this spot into a heaven on earth.
Another fun activity is climbing to the top of Ham Rong Mountain, San May (Cloud Yard), at an elevation of 1800 meters, for a spectacular view over Sapa town. On bright days with white clouds floating around, travelers can even see the summit of Fansipan from here. Tourists can stop by Cong Troi 1, Cong Troi 2 (Heaven Gate 1 and 2) for a rest and photo opportunity on their trip to San May. Visitors can also get a magnificent view of the French villas and terraced fields below from these locations.
The finest time to visit Ham Rong is in the spring, when all of the mountain's flowers bloom, displaying their beauty and fragrance.
Sapa Church is only a short walk from the foot of Ham Rong Mountain. It only takes a few minutes for travelers staying in Sapa town to stroll from their accommodation to Ham Rong Mountain.
