U Minh Thuong National Park in Kien Giang Province was named the world's 2,228th Ramsar site for its untamed beauty and abundant biodiversity of a distinctive wetland. U Minh Thuong National Park is an interesting destination with a lot of promise for sustainable tourism development. It offers a unique experience for individuals who enjoy nature and want to learn about the local culture.
The U Minh Thuong National Park is situated in Kien Giang province, 365 kilometers southwest of Ho Chi Minh City, in the An Minh and Vinh Thuan districts. It is located in a freshwater wetland environment that includes peat swamp woodland, seasonally flooded grassland, and open marsh. A 1 to 3 m thick layer of peat covers the soil layer. U Minh Thuong National Park's core zone is surrounded by a perimeter canal and dike system with a number of gates that help maintain the water level. For the rainy season, water is released, but during the rest of the year, water is stored to support production and daily activities in the neighboring villages.
U Minh Thuong National Park is also one of the last remaining climax peat swamp forests in the biography region, with mixed forests and Melaleuca forests on peat covering approximately 3,000 ha (almost 37% of the park). The property has been designated as one of the Mekong Delta's three most important wetlands conservation sites. It is home to 32 mammal species, 187 bird species, 34 reptile and amphibian species, 37 fish species, and 203 insect species, among others.
The yellow-headed temple turtle (Heosemys annadalii), the endangered yellow-breasted bunting (Emberiza aureola), the Sunda pangolin (Manis javanica), and the fishing cat are only a few of them (Prionailurus viverrinus). It's also one of only three places on the planet where the endangered hairy-nosed otter can be found (Lutra sumatrana). More than 20,000 waterbirds visit the area on a regular basis. The majority of the bird species seen are native, and eight of them are only found in the lower Mekong Basin. The site also has spiritual, historical, archaeological, educational, and scientific significance.
