The Cu Chi Tunnels or Viet Cong Tunnels in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) were one of the proudest parts of the Vietnamese heroic history struggle as a legend of the 20th century and became famous throughout the world.
Cu Chi tunnel is a one-of-a-kind and unparalleled marvel, with 250 kilometers of tunnel spreading underground like cobwebs after tunnel-related works such as trenching, docks, fighting positions, tunnels for eating, sleeping, meeting, activities, military, food storage, water wells, Hoang Cam stoves, and so on were completed.
Viet Cong militants used the tunnels as hideouts during battle, as well as communication and supply channels, hospitals, food and ammunition stockpiles, and residential quarters for a large number of guerrilla combatants. The Viet Cong relied heavily on the tunnel systems in their resistance to American forces, and they helped them win ultimate military success.
The first tunnel in Cu Chi was discovered in 1848 in the two communes of Tan Phu Trung and Phuoc Vinh An. At first, there were only a few short and rudimentary constructed parts, which were utilized to hide documents, weapons, and soldiers operating in enemy territory. It eventually spread to the communes. From 1961 through 1965, the Cu Chi people's guerilla fight grew dramatically, incurring massive enemy losses and contributing to the defection of the American strategic "Special War." The "backbone" tunnel had been constructed by six communes to the north of Cu Chi. The agencies and units then built branch tunnels that connected to the "backbone," a network of interconnecting tunnels.
