The Vietnam Women's Museum first opened its doors to the public in 1995. It was refurbished over a four-year period, from 2006 to 2010. More than 1000 documents, images, and items on display in the permanent exhibition demonstrate the historical and contemporary roles of Vietnamese women in the arts and in home life. In addition, the museum hosts thematic exhibitions that depict changes and developments in contemporary society.
The museum's mission statement reads, "To develop public knowledge and understanding of Vietnamese women's history and cultural heritage, therefore contributing to gender equality," the museum's mission statement reads.
