The President Ho Chi Minh’s Stilt House

Ho Chi Minh's stilt house, where Vietnam's first president lived and worked, is a popular historic attraction in Hanoi for both Vietnamese and foreign visitors.

The single-story tile-roofed stilt house at 1 Hoang Hoa Tham Street in Ba Dinh District, built in 1958, has a length of 10.5 meters and a width of 6.2 meters. It is modeled after the traditional Tay-Thai ethnic stilt houses found in Viet Bac, Vietnam's northernmost area, which includes six provinces: Cao Bang, Bac Kan, Lang Son, Ha Giang, Tuyen Quang, and Thai Nguyen. During the fight against the French colonists, the region was known as Viet Bac (1945–1954).

Ho Chi Minh (Uncle Ho) had studied the house's architecture extensively with architect Nguyen Van Ninh before its construction. He intended it to look like his former stilt house in Viet Bac, with an open ground floor and a top story with a working space and a bedroom separated by a bookcase and encircled by a balcony.

The stilt house symbolizes President Ho Chi Minh's simplicity and humility, as opposed to the splendor of the Presidential Palace. From 1958 until his death in 1969, President Ho Chi Minh resided and worked here. It witnessed many of Ho Chi Minh's national decisions for the country, making it a part of Vietnam's architectural, cultural, and political heritage.

The stilt house is part of President Ho Chi Minh's historical vestiges at the Presidential Palace, which was designated a Special National Relic Site in 2009. Tourists can access the stilt residence through a separate staircase erected following the death of President Ho Chi Minh. Over 80 million people have visited the historic site since 1970.
