O Quy Ho has official name Tram Ton, is one of the 4 most challenging passes in northwest region of Vietnam. The other three are Ma Pi Leng in Ha Giang province, Khau Pha in Yen Bai province, and Pha Din in Son La-Dien Bien province. O Quy Ho Pass fascinates adventurers with its beauty and majesty.
The 50-kilometer long O Quy Ho pass, also known as Hoang Lien Son or May (Cloud) pass, connects Lai Chau and Lao Cai provinces over the Hoang Lien Son range. The pass is linked to a mythology of the Love Waterfall, where a fairy met and fell in love with a lumberjack named O Quy Ho. Due to their inability to marry, the fairy transformed into a bird and flew above the mountain, calling out his name, "O Quy Ho".
The pass is also known as the "Cloud Pass" since it is always shrouded by clouds. Visitors can observe the stunning vista of Fansipan peak, Indochina's highest mountain, from the pass. According to locals, "O Quy Ho Pass, also known as the Sa Pa Heaven's Gate, is the highest point of Vietnam's highways, at 2,000 meters above sea level. The picturesque valleys of Lai Chau can be seen from the summit of the pass. The passes of Lao Cai province are frequently veiled in clouds when it is sunny in Lai Chau".
The climate of Lai Chau and Lao Cai provinces on each side of the O Quy Ho pass varies greatly throughout the year. When Lai Chau is hot and sunny, Lao Cai is cold and foggy, and vice versa. The route across the O Quy Ho pass has been improved, making the trip for tourists easier. An ocean of clouds can be seen from 2,000 meters above sea level.
In northeastern Vietnam, O Quy Ho is one of the most appealing places. Its natural beauty provides visitors with a breathtaking view.
