Strengthen your negotiation talents and head towards Hoi An Central Market-one of the best shopping in Vietnam-to the southeast. Rich in the smell of scented herbs and spices, the vibrant Vietnamese silk colors, deep delve and you're guaranteed a bargain. Prices tend to be higher at stalls near the entrance, so head straightaway for the best purchases.
Spices like saffron and cinnamon, as well as the unusual fresh fruit and vegetables on exhibit, are excellent purchases in Hoi An Central Market. There is also a large assortment of fresh fish available due to its riverside proximity.
The market is known for its tailors, who have their own part of the market. Fine silk tailoring is more affordable here than other places in Hoi An, with garment makers completing a dress, shirt, jacket, or full suit in as little as 24 hours. The Central Market is also a great place to look for souvenirs and local handicrafts.
Resting on the banks of the Thu Bon River, the bustling Hoi An Central Market is certainly worth a look for its authentic slice of Vietnamese life. The market is busy throughout the day with locals bargaining hard alongside tourists, so it is best to arrive first thing in the morning. The negotiating over fish usually starts around 07:00 as the fishermen drop their catch off and the market vendors and local buyers dive in to get the best fish. Be warned that it can get very messy. Nevertheless, it's certainly a sight not to be missed.
There are also a lot of live ducks and chickens tied up and ready to be sold in the market, as well as a lot of Vietnamese cooking ingredients. As the day develops, the stench will become more potent, and the market will become busier and noisier. If you wish to avoid this, go to the east side and look for the enormous shed-style building that contains the tailors as well as many kinds of Asian silk and fabrics.
As a tourist walking through Hoi An Central Market, you can expect a slew of booth owners yelling at you to buy their items; the best course of action is to simply smile and keep walking. When you do decide to buy something, keep in mind that the initial price you're given is likely to be exorbitant; instead, offer half and work your way up to a price you're both happy with. Prepare to walk away, and you may be pleasantly surprised by the reasonable price you are offered.
Opening Hours: daily from 6:00 a.m., and it is advisable to arrive early to observe the fish arriving before entering.
The Thu Bon River runs through Nguyen Hue and Tran Phu.
Note: Closed shoes are recommended because the market floor can become damp and sticky, especially when visiting the seafood department.
