Hoi An, where the Thu Bon River empties into the East China Sea, was formerly a significant Asian commercial hub. From the 16th to the 18th centuries, merchants came from all over the world to visit, stopping by while waiting for the weather to change before continuing on. Along the bustling alleyways of Hoi An's old town, traders from France, Portugal, and the Netherlands mixed with those from Japan, China, Thailand, India, and Vietnam.
Although there are artefacts on show depicting historical and cultural developments before and after the trading years, the Riverside Museum of History and Culture is primarily a celebration of this period. There are also some pottery objects that were part of the traders' commodities, as well as a collection of ceramics and historical photographs and drawings portraying the merchant period. An array of Cham relics, including bronze temple bells and gongs, are among the artifacts that predate this period.
Hoi An's Riverside Museum of History and Culture displays a wide array of artifacts, including images of local architecture, ceramics, pottery, and the changing faces of Hoi An featuring Champa from the 7th to the 15th century.
The museum is housed in the gorgeous Quan Am pagoda, one of Vietnam's oldest, which was established in 1653 and houses relics from Hoi An's 2,000-year history. The museum provides an intriguing look into Hoi An's history, including traditional funeral practices and some very ancient coffins, as well as an eclectic mix of exhibitions depicting Hoi An through the ages. Ceramics are plentiful, albeit not as numerous as those on show in the Museum of Trade Ceramics.
