Giac Lam, the oldest Buddhist pagoda in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), was recognized as an important historical site in 1988 by the Vietnamese Department of Culture. The pagoda is located in Tan Binh District and is encircled by a large, walled garden with statues of mythical dragons guarding numerous temples in the area.
The ceremonial hall, chanting hall, and refectory make up the interior of this ornately designed shrine. Beautifully produced images of Buddha in various incarnations, as well as other Taoist deities, each with their own altar, are housed in this enormous and spreading facility. All of the wooden pillars are adorned with Chinese characters in red and gold.
The enormous figure of Amitabha Buddha, which is encircled by five smaller Buddha statues, dominates the ceremonial hall. The main hall also houses the "nine dragon altar," which depicts the birth of Prince Sidharta, the future Buddha Gotama.
Outside, the 32-meter-tall stupa, a recent addition, towers over the temple grounds. A Buddha relic is stored on the top floor of this seven-story hexagonal tower. The top floor of the building offers panoramic views of the city. The white statue of Kuan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy, stands in front of the stupa on an open lotus blossom, a sign of purity.
