Tourists will see the 230m-high Sam Mountain with breathtaking scenery and many historic remains when traveling about 6km west of Chau Doc Town, An Giang Province. Sam Mountain is the highest one in the Mekong Delta.
On the route there, stop by a small Khmer village for a short stay and take in the sights of the two rice fields that lie along the road. You will take a short hike up the mountainside to see how mountain people live. Around Sam Mountain, there are dozens of pagodas and temples, many of which are located in caves.
The Chinese influence is palpable, as ethnic Chinese flock to Sam Mountain (both as pilgrims from Vietnam and abroad). The mountain not only has gorgeous scenery, but it also has many historic ruins that the people of the Nam Bo Plain adore. Near Sam Mountain, prominent sites to visit include Ba Chua Xu Temple, Tay An Pagoda, Thoai Ngoc Hau Tomb, Tao Ngo Garden, and Bach Van Hill. There is a shrine at the summit of the mountain with excellent views of the surrounding landscape.
Climbing to the top of Sam Mountain is, of course, the highlight of any trip there. If the weather permits, the views from the top are breathtaking, and you can easily gaze out over Cambodia. On the peak, there is a military outpost, a relic of the Khmer Rouge's cross-border operations. The outpost is still operational, and the troops are used to tourists taking photos of them. However, you should get permission and perhaps bribe the soldiers with cigarettes before photographing them or doing anything else that could be considered critical tactically.
It's simpler to walk down than it is to climb up, so if you want to save time, hire a motorbike to take you to the top. The road to the summit is on the mountain's east side. You may get to the main temple area by walking down a beautiful, traffic-free route on the north side. The top of the hill has been adorned with amusement park ceramic dinosaurs and other amusement park-themed decorations. However, there are a few little temples and pavilions that provide a touch of elegance while also reminding you that this is Vietnam, not Disneyland.
