Phong Dien, a floating market in Can Tho City, offers a unique way to start the day. Phong Dien is 17 kilometers southeast of Can Tho city. Phong Dien is one of two floating marketplaces in the Mekong Delta city, with Cai Rang being the more well-known.
At Phong Dien floating market, traders assemble early in the morning to purchase fresh veggies and fruit to resell elsewhere. The most congested hour is between 5:30 and 6:30 a.m., when a large number of boats choke the channel.
The Phong Dien Floating Market used to be located at a crossroads on the Phong Dien River, but it has now relocated 800 meters to Nhon Ai Commune. With its beautiful backdrop and quiet waterway environment, the market's new site helps it attract more customers, dealers, and tourists.
Visitors can request a tour of the market from sellers while savoring meals such as noodle soup and getting a close-up view of Mekong Delta market life while hearing traders' stories from a boat. At the market, a bowl of noodle soup starts at VND20,000, while beverages start at VND10,000. When visiting Phong Dien, having breakfast and coffee is a fantastic experience.
Tourists are frequently shocked to find traders transporting fish sauce, dishwashing soap, stockings, gloves, fruits, and other items on a small boat that resembles a convenience store. Traders begin to shift to small canals in Phong Dien around 7 a.m., when the market becomes less congested and they can continue selling their products. Almost every Mekong Delta product can be found in Phong Dien. The price is the same whether you are a native or a tourist.
Phong Dien loating markets and other ones are still a unique cultural tradition of people in the Mekong Delta, despite the development of highways to remote rural parts of Can Tho city.
