Thay Pagoda, which is almost 1000 years old and picturesque landscape, is dedicated to Tu Dao Hanh, a zen monk who invented Vietnam's distinctive water puppetry art.
Thay Pagoda is located at the foot of Sai Son Mountain, some 30 kilometers southwest of Hanoi. It is a tourist and pilgrim destination where they may see the antique buildings as well as the tranquil and lovely scenery.
The pagoda, also known as Sai, Ca, or Thien Phuc, was constructed during the reign of King Ly Nhan Tong in the 11th century.
The pagoda is linked to the monk Tu Dao Hanh, who was famed for his humility and kindness to the needy. According to legend, he devised water puppetry to illustrate the lives of rural people. This style of performance art has become well-known in Vietnam and around the world.
The Ha (lower) Pagoda, Trung (middle) Pagoda, and Thuong (upper) Pagoda are the three parallel buildings that make up Thay Pagoda. The outer Ha Pagoda is used for offerings and rituals, the middle Trung Pagoda is used for Buddha worship, and the higher Thuong Pagoda is used to worship Tu Dao Hanh.
With a sloping roof and an airy and tranquil setting, the centuries-old edifice appears stunning. A magnificent lake with a floating temple where water puppetry is performed and two bridges connecting to the Tam Phu Temple may astonish visitors.
Cac Co Cave is also nearby to test those who are afraid of the dark. The cave is difficult to approach since it is reached over steep rocks that become slippery after rain.
The cave contains 3,600 pairs of Vietnamese soldiers' remains who were walled in while fighting Chinese invaders. Because the cave is deep and dark, guests will need a tour guide and a flashlight.
