Travelers to Hanoi can use a variety transportation forms to get in, around, and out, each better suited to a specific timetable or budget.
Taxi
Taxis are the fastest and most convenient mode of transportation, but they are also the most expensive.
Bike
Bikes can be rented for as little as a dollar per day at your hotel, but they can be quite dangerous for visitors unfamiliar with Hanoi's chaotic, anarchic traffic.
Cyclo
A bicycle rickshaw is known as a "cyclo." Although this low-cost, ecologically beneficial means of transportation is rapidly disappearing, it can still be found in Vietnam's major cities.
Xe om
Hanoi's motorbike taxis are known as "xe om." The name translates to "hug vehicle," and that's exactly what it is: you ride pillion and hug the driver from behind, hanging on for dear life as the two of you zip through the city's gridlock.
Xe om may be identified by their green pith helmets, which they wear on street corners. The fee should be negotiable and will be determined by the distance traveled.
Train
The train station is located at 120 Le Duan in the heart of the city, where you can buy tickets for trains that will transport you all the way south to Saigon or north to Sapa.
Bus
Around Hanoi, there are a number of bus stops, each of which dispatches buses that only travel in one direction. For the most up-to-date pricing and schedules, call or visit these bus stations; like with the train, buy your tickets at least one day ahead of time to assure a seat.
