Can Cau market has existed for a long time in Si Ma Cai (Can Cau commune, Si Ma Cai district, Lao Cai province). People from the highland's ethnic minority go to the market every Saturday, as is customary. The Can Cau market has evolved into a distinct and essential cultural element for ethnic minorities in the Si Ma Cai border region.
Many people visit Can Cau market early in the morning, when the mountain and sky are still shrouded in fog. To transport things, locals use horses, motorbikes, bicycles, and other vehicles, although the majority still walk. The silver-gray color of the fog and the bright brocade colors on the skirts of ethnic women make the route to Can Cau market incredibly vivid in the grandeur of the mountain.
Can Cau market is bustling around 6 a.m., with bright outfits and a variety of merchandise. The market is divided into several areas, including a brocade-selling area, agricultural products, tools and livestock for production, a fruit-selling area, pharmaceuticals, wine, food and beverage areas, traditional medicine, and specialized trading areas, with highland people bringing buffaloes to trade and exchange at the market. Each room has its own distinct characteristics, although the eating area is the most noisy. Each restaurant serves modest dishes such as "Thang Co," noodles, soup, and porridge; some establishments specialize in boiling pork and alcohol.
With bowls of corn wine in hand, the men gathered around the pan of "Thang Co" and chatted. The brocade section is still the most impressive. Women are always drawn to brocade products here because of their attractiveness and vibrant hues. The things that make up the Can Cau market's characteristics are traditional clothing and brocade.
Tourists that visit Can Cau market will remember the unique characteristics of the ethnic minority market culture in Vietnam's border highlands.
