10 Best Street Drinks in Hanoi

Visiting top 10 street drinks in Hanoi is a dispensable part in your journey to this thousand–year capital of Vietnam.

1. Egg Coffee (Cà phê trứng)

Egg coffee (cà phê trứng) is a Vietnamese specialty that originated in Hanoi, made with egg yolks, sugar, sweetened condensed milk, and coffee. To make the drink, cook egg yolks with sugar and add coffee.

2. Bia Hơi (Fresh beer)

A bia hoi is a newly made beer that has been tapped from casks. Bia hoi is extremely inexpensive, with a large glass costing between 5000 and 8000 VND (less than half a dollar), so it's no surprise that it's widely popular throughout Vietnam. Customers sit on little plastic seats on the sidewalk in most street bars where it is served.

If you're searching for a comfortable chair, Bia Hoi is not the place to go. Sit on tiny plastic stools on the street, right next to the residents, talk to the employees, and become a part of the scene. This is a simple way to become engaged in Hanoi's street culture. If you never try, you'll never know.

3. Fruit Smoothie (Sinh tố)

A few teaspoons of condensed milk, coconut milk, crushed ice, and fresh fruits are needed to make a fruit smoothie. Custard apple, jackfruit, watermelon, strawberry, sugar apple, lychee, mango, avocado, passionfruit, dragonfruit,  and banana are among the smoothies available.

4. Coconut Ice-Cream (Kem dừa)

5. Trang Tien Ice-cream (Kem Tràng Tiền)

Since its inception in 1958, Trang Tien Ice-cream, or "Kem Tràng Tiền," has been an indispensable delicacy for many generations of Hanoians. Anyone who has had the pleasure of tasting it will never forget the capital's unique practice of eating Trang Tien ice cream while standing.

Its well-known name stems from its address, 35 Tràng Tin Street. Trang Tien ice-cream establishment won over the hearts of everyone from toddlers to the elderly with its exquisite taste and inexpensive cost, despite starting with only four ice-cream varieties: chocolate, young rice, coconut milk, and green bean.

The Trang Tien ice-cream shop never seems to be empty, especially during the scorching summers in Hanoi. People would wait in line from inside the store to outside the street to purchase a few ice creams. Even so, some would be forced to go empty-handed.

Hanoi's culture and traditions have become ingrained in Trang Tien ice cream.

6. Sugarcane juice (Mước mía)

The juice collected from pressed sugarcane is known as sugarcane juice. It is not an unusual occurrence in Vietnam. Many countries, particularly those where sugarcane is commercially farmed, such as Southeast Asia, the Indian Subcontinent, Egypt, and Latin America, drink it as a beverage.

Sugarcane juice is made from peeled sugarcane crushed in a mill.

In Hanoi, jackfruit yogurt can now be found in practically every sweet porridge restaurant, so you won't have to look too hard.

9. Yogurt With Fermented Purple Sticky Rice (Sữa chua nếp cẩm)

Yogurt combined with fermented purple sticky rice, condensed milk, and crushed ice will create a refreshing summer dish that you will remember for as long as you taste it.
