The Saigon Central Post Office in Ho Chi Minh City is a magnificently preserved French colonial relic and may be Southeast Asia's grandest post office. The two cultural attractions, which are located adjacent to one another and may be viewed together, allow tourists to imagine life in Vietnam under the Indochinese Empire. The structure was designed by Gustave Eiffel, the famed engineer who also designed the Statue of Liberty and the Eiffel Tower, and it has arched windows and wooden shutters, precisely like it did in its heyday in the late 1800s.
The looping arches, beautifully sculpted marble flooring, and ancient telephone boxes within Central Post Office in Ho Chi Minh City, built between 1886 and 1891, serve as a reminder of the importance of the post office in the days before email and mobile phones. The big portrait of the President Ho Chi Minh hanging high over everyone at the far end of the building reminds everyone that we are clearly in Vietnam, despite the architecture being very French. Two maps of the region, one showing the telegraph lines that crisscross Vietnam and Cambodia and the other exhibiting a map of the Saigon region in 1892, are painted on the walls overhead.
The fact that this is still a working post office adds to the experience, and we encourage everyone to send a letter or postcard from here—it's a piece of living history where even the old-fashioned glue pots are still in use for adhering stamps to letters. There are two wings branching out from the main office that offer souvenirs, postcards, and lacquerware, but the prices are exorbitant, and the same items may certainly be bought for a lower price elsewhere.
