Thang Long Water Puppet Theater is a world–famous location that portrays the essence of Vietnamese people and wet–rice civilization through puppet water shows.
The Thang Long Puppet Theatre is a popular tourist destination for both domestic and international visitors. It is located on Dinh Tien Hoang Street, which is close to many other Hanoi attractions such as Hoan Kiem Lake, Ngoc Son Temple, Hanoi Old Quarter, Ly Thai To Park, Hanoi Opera House, and others. It offers a water puppet display, which is a traditional Vietnamese art form.
The theatre was founded in October 1969 and has since grown to become the most well-known brand name in Vietnamese water puppetry. The Theatre's goals include preserving, maintaining, and developing traditional water puppetry; confirming and reinforcing its brand name; contributing a large portion to advertising; and speeding up global cultural and artistic interchange and collaboration. Every day, there are usually 5-7 concerts to meet the demands of the crowd.
The major themes of the water puppet play are Vietnamese farmers' daily lives (cultivating, tending buffalo, catching fish...), social entertainment (swimming contests, dragon dancing...), or historical legends (Le Loi returns his valuable sword...). A Vietnamese orchestra performs traditional music backed by drums, wooden bells, horns, bamboo flutes, and cymbals. There are also authentic Vietnamese operatic tunes that tell the story that the puppets are enacting. The main music used in the water puppetry show is Cheo music, which is a traditional art form exclusive to the Northern Plains.
