Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) Zoo & Botanical Gardens

Ho Chi Minh City Zoo and Botanical Gardens or Thao Cam Vien in Vietnamese (formerly known as Saigon Zoo and Botanical Gardens) is one of the world's oldest zoos, having opened in 1865 by French botanist JB Louis Pierre. The zoo currently has around 550 animals on display, while the botanical gardens have over 1,830 trees and 260 plant types, some of which are over 100 years old.

The animal conservation area, orchid garden, plant conservation center, and children's amusement area are just a few of the things to see. The zoo and botanical gardens, which also include a memorial to Vietnamese soldiers lost in World War I, have lakes teeming with tropical fish. Locals and tourists alike flock to the Ho Chi Minh Zoo and Botanical Gardens to spend an afternoon. They are often startled to learn that you may get up close and personal with some of the animals and feed them.

Highlights of the Ho Chi Minh City Zoo and Botanical Gardens

The Botanical Gardens have a diverse range of flora and fauna, including 20 orchid species, 32 cactus species, and 34 bonsai species, as well as trees, plants, and ferns, some of which are as old as the gardens itself.

Monkeys, tigers, hippos, lions, elephants, tortoises, and snakes are among the creatures on display in the zoo. There are also rarer species on display, such as the white tiger, which is being shown in Vietnam for the first time. The zoo's breeding-in-captivity program attempts to aid endangered species conservation and has recently bred the crested argus pheasant, making it the only zoo in the world to do so.

The Botanical Gardens hope to use the space as a learning center where visitors can learn more about the species on display and how to safeguard them in the future.

Aside from animals and vegetation, the zoo and botanical gardens are also home to the Saigon National Museum and the World War I monument. The museum covers the full history of Vietnam and houses hundreds of important papers as well as combat equipment from the French colonial era.

Ho Chi Minh City Zoo has seen better days in some areas and is certainly not comparable to western zoos, yet it is superior to zoos in other Asian countries. This may not be the place for you if you have any worries about animals kept in captivity.

The zoo is near Saigon District 1, and taxis are the most convenient way to get there. The entrance fee covers both the zoo and the gardens, but you'll have to pay more if you want to feed the animals. The major gates are located on Nguyen Binh Khiem Street and Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Street, respectively.
