The picturesque Fujian (Phuc Kien) assembly hall was built to allow citizens from Fujian, China, to interact and meet up while living or visiting Hoi An. The assembly hall, which was constructed around 1690 with the main gate added much later, is a World Cultural Heritage site and is frequently visited by tourists seeking sight of this magnificent piece of artwork.
The Jinshang Golden Mountain Temple is housed in the hall and has altars decorated with artistically graced dragons, dedicated to the sea deity and sailor Thien Hau. The temple is located inside the hall. A fertility shrine is also available to help childless people who come to pray to achieve their wishes.
The Fujian assembly hall started off as a Vietnamese-built thatched pagoda devoted to Buddha. The pagoda was eventually sold to Phuc Kien tradesmen, who took on the task of restoring the pagoda, which had become quite run down by that time. It was eventually reopened as the Phuc Kien Assembly Hall, and it has since become a symbol of Hoi An architecture as well as a heritage masterpiece of considerable historical significance.
The assembly hall is adorned with sculptures, bronze bells, and drums, as well as lacquered works of art that form a vibrant display of Fujian artistry. Unsurprisingly, Chinese festivals are typically staged in the assembly hall in a theatrical manner. There are several animal paintings and monuments, including legendary creatures such as the Unicorn, which represents knowledge, and the Phoenix, which represents grandeur.
The temple devoted to the sea goddess Thien Hau, who lays with the goddesses Thuan Phong Nhi, who is credited with hearing the distress call of ships thousands of miles away, and Thien Ly Nhan, who has the eyesight to see those ships, is the main point of interest.
It is well worth your time to visit during a Chinese holiday to see the hall in all of its splendor. Before or after you explore inside, take a moment to examine the artwork outside; once inside, search for the mosaic foundation with fish to symbolize achievement. There's also a turtle nearby to represent perseverance.
