The Binh Thuy historical house is located on Bui Huu Nghia Street in Binh Thuy ward, Can Tho city, and is an excellent spot to learn about the region's history. It is one of the few remaining French-style houses in Can Tho, Mekong Delta. The home was designated as a national cultural site because of its French architectural style.
The Binh Thuy ancient house was erected by the Duong family in 1870 on a nearly 6,000-square-meter plot of land and is now administered by Duong Minh Hien, a sixth-generation descendant of the family. Tourists enter a vast courtyard lined with red Chinese tiles after passing past the entrance gate. Orchids and beautiful plants of various kinds can be seen inside the courtyard.
A fifth-generation Duong family member is an orchid collector who has spent a lot of time and effort collecting numerous precious and rare orchids. He also started orchid-lovers' groups to share their enthusiasm for the flower. Because of this, the house is also known as the Binh Thuy Orchid Garden.
To enter the Binh Thuy house, there are four stairs: two are bow-shaped and lead to the main chambers, while the other two lead to the building's two wings. Visitors can get a closer look at the exquisite decorative encaustic patterns of the domes and doors by stopping at the stairwell.
The initial impression that guests have of the Binh Thuy house is that it is cool and fresh. Even though there are no fans or air conditioners inside, the heat seems to dissipate as soon as one enters. This is due to the house's numerous doors and windows, as well as the fact that its foundation is around one metre higher than the ground level, making it more roomy and comfortable.
According to Ngo Ngoc Lien, a Duong family daughter-in-law, when the house was built, the owner ordered over 10 centimetres of salt to be placed under the foundation to keep the house cool and dry. Imported French tiles with black and crimson roses are used to pave the floor. The house is unique because, although it was created in a French manner, it is decorated and arranged in a Vietnamese style.
A crimson lacquer ancestors' altar with gold trim was placed in the most somber location in the house. Beds and cabinets were ornately carved with embellishments depicting daily life in the historical period. The historic Binh Thuy mansion also has precious antiques that have been passed down through the years, including six rows of 24 black ironwood pillars, a Chinese table and chair set with a marble-made surface, a Louis XV-style salon, and an 18th-century chandelier.
The mansion has been chosen for the filming of numerous popular cinematic works, including "Nguoi Dep Tay Do" (A Beauty of Tay Do), "Nhung Neo Duong Phu Sa" (Alluvial Ways), and "Nguoi Tinh" (The Lover)—a famous French drama film. Many guests come to the house after seeing the videos and want to see the places that the cameramen chose to film.
